The restaurant is a family business run by Marko and his brother Nik who grew up in the industry. The story began when their father arrived to New Zealand from Europe in the 1980s and started as a dish hand for an Italian restaurateur Gino. He earned his stripes as a chef after volunteering to cook for 120 people when the restaurant found itself without its regular chef. Years later, the Zoraja family opened their first establishment in Mount Maunganui and Osteria was born.
